Depression

 

Depression is likely to be one of the greatest burdens of the 21st century. No one is immune. Depression does not discriminate a persons social-class, background; colour, race, religion, gender, sexuality, financial status, qualifications, size or age.

Depression is a genuine health condition, you can’t simply ‘pull yourself together’, when feeling extreme sadness, hopelessness and low mood that persists over months or years.

There is nothing more depressing than having it all and still feeling desperately sad.

 

What causes depression?

 

If you are undergoing a stressful life event for a long period of time, or, such as; – work issues, neglect, relationship problems, loss, trauma, financial pressure.

Recognising the symptoms of depression is often the biggest hurdle. It can be particularly difficult distinguishing between grief and depression as they share the same characteristics. The symptoms of depression can be complex and vary widely between people. Many people try to cope with their symptoms without realising they are unwell and sometimes it can take family or a friend to suggest something is wrong. If some of these symptoms are causing difficulties with; work, home, social life, family life or relationships, this could be depression?

  • continuous low mood, loss of motivation
  • feeling anxious or worried
  • easily upset, very tearful
  • tired and decreased energy, fatigued
  • difficulty concentrating, making decisions
  • loss of appetite or overeating
  • trouble sleeping – insomnia, early-morning wakefulness or excessive sleeping
  • feeling irritable and intolerant of others
  • avoiding people, close family and friends
  • suicidal thoughts
  • increasingly isolating yourself from friends and family

 

Sometimes depression will cause difficulties in relationships as the person withdraws and is unable to communicate or hold on to their self-esteem.

Sometimes depression is a clinical imbalance that can be treated through medication and therapy, and at other times it is in relation to an emotional disturbance. Once that event is properly processed and understood, the symptoms are relieved and you can move forward in your life.

Feel suspicious & guarded
Create conflicts
Feel restless & agitated
Need to feel in control at all costs
Find it ‘weak’ to admit self-doubt or despair
Use alcohol, TV, sports & sex to self-medicate

Left untreated the symptoms of clinical or major depression may get worse and last longer.

Postnatal Depression in Woman

 

1 in 8 new mothers experience postnatal depression and seek help. Postnatal depression is a common condition that usually develops within the first six weeks following the birth of a baby, either gradually or suddenly. Many often try to ignore their symptoms, as they fear to be seen as a bad parent admitting they have a problem or fear their baby will be taken away.

The symptoms can vary from mild to severe, and can affect each woman differently. Symptoms share similarities with those of general depression, such as, a lack of interest in the baby and everyday life, or feeling emotionally withdrawn and overwhelmed with feelings of despair, guilt or worthlessness.

You may experience;

  • a persistent feeling of sadness, low mood and hopelessness
  • feelings of hostility of indifference to your partner
  • experience of a difficult labour
  • your baby is born prematurely, or is unwell
  • feelings of hostility of indifference to your baby
  • constantly irritable and angry

Menopause

 

For all woman the menopause is personal experience.

The menopause can unexpectedly effect you, your confidence at work and impact your relationships. These changing hormone’s can impact your sleep, memory, energy, sex drive, mood, confidence or self-esteem, during this transition it can cause a time of anxiety, distress, or depression, and the loss of reproductive ability may be deeply felt.
